Kluane National Park Artist Residency

This residency offers artists the chance to explore the intersection of science and art while living and working in the stunning Kluane National Park and Reserve, Yukon. With support from the Yukon Arts Centre, Parks Canada, and the Arctic Institute of North America, artists will have access to researchers, scientists, and ecological experts to inspire their work and engage with the public.

Eligibility:

  • Open to Canadian artists.

  • Two artists will be selected: one Northern Artist (from Yukon, NWT, Nunavut, Nunavik, Nunatsiavut, or Indigenous artists from these regions living elsewhere in Canada) and one artist from Canada.

  • Preference given to artists of Yukon First Nation or other Canadian Indigenous ancestry.

About the Residency: This residency offers artists the chance to explore the intersection of science and art while living and working in the stunning Kluane National Park and Reserve, Yukon. With support from the Yukon Arts Centre, Parks Canada, and the Arctic Institute of North America, artists will have access to researchers, scientists, and ecological experts to inspire their work and engage with the public.

  • Duration: Two separate 2-week residencies between late June – early September 2026.

  • Public Engagement: Artists will host:

  • Three public programs (workshops, talks, demonstrations).

  • Two “artist at work” drop-in sessions.

  • Final Work Submission: Artists must provide at least one image of a work initiated or developed during the residency (due November 31, 2026).

  • Residency Includes:

  • $3,000 CAD honorarium from the Yukon Arts Centre.

  • Accommodation & Meals: Private cabin at the Kluane Lake Research Station (KLRS), a remote research hub 220 km northwest of Whitehorse.

  • Studio Access: Workspaces at KLRS and access to Kluane National Park visitor centers.

  • Public Program Support: Basic art supplies provided for workshops.

  • Scientific Collaboration: Access to Parks Canada staff, scientists, and ecological experts for inspiration and program planning.

Artist Responsibilities:

  • Transportation: Artists must cover travel costs to and from KLRS (vehicle strongly recommended).

  • Travel Insurance: Required to avoid unexpected medical expenses.

  • Remote Conditions: KLRS is off-grid, with solar power, limited WiFi, and no cell reception. Shared workspaces, washhouse facilities, and meals are provided by a full-time chef.

Important Note: Artists are prohibited from selling artwork during the residency or public workshops under Parks Canada regulations.
